Tax Planning for High Net Worth Individuals

Business holdings, investment portfolios, real property, family obligations: these interact, so treating them separately costs money every year. Our advisory covers trust and estate tax planning, alongside income, gift, estate return preparation for the whole family.

Personal Attention, Year Round

We work with business owners, entrepreneurs, families as a standing advisor, not a seasonal preparer. A liquidity event, a property acquisition, a new generation: each changes the plan, so the tax strategy gets revisited.

Our High Net Worth Tax Services Include:

  • Year-round tax planning & preparation
  • Full-service accounting with quarterly financial statements
  • Payroll processing & reporting
  • Estate and succession tax planning guidance
  • Multi-generational wealth transfer strategies

Hold significant real estate? Our real estate tax practice covers 1031 exchanges and transaction structuring. Alternative minimum tax, capital gains strategies sit with tax planning & consulting. Trust, gift, and estate returns stay in the same hands as the planning.

Working With Your Attorney and Financial Adviser

We handle the tax side. Wills, trust instruments, and asset-protection structures are drafted by your attorney. Investment decisions sit with your financial adviser. Once those documents exist, we prepare the returns the structures require, then give each adviser the tax projections their part depends on.

High Net Worth Tax Questions

Do you prepare the trust, gift, and estate returns, or only advise on them?

Both. We prepare the gift tax return (Form 709), the estate tax return (Form 706), and the fiduciary income tax return for a trust or estate (Form 1041), with the planning done in the same engagement. The returns depend on the strategy behind them, so splitting the two between firms is where positions get lost. Details on each return are on our tax planning page.

How do gifts to children or grandchildren affect my taxes?

Gifts up to the annual exclusion, $19,000 per recipient for 2025 and again for 2026, need no return. Larger gifts to any one person are reported on Form 709 and reduce the lifetime exemption that shelters your estate later, $13,990,000 for 2025, then $15,000,000 for 2026. No tax is usually due at the time, but the return has to be filed. The basis the recipient takes depends on how the gift was made.

What triggers the alternative minimum tax?

The AMT is a second calculation of your tax with fewer deductions allowed, and you pay whichever result is higher. For high-income taxpayers the common triggers are exercising incentive stock options, large capital gains in a single year, and certain private activity bond interest. The exposure can often be reduced by spreading an exercise or a sale across tax years, which is why it belongs in year-round planning rather than at filing.
